Freshwater Memorials
Each of the memorials we place in marine or freshwater environments help create shelter for wildlife and help recreate vibrant ecosystems where life can flourish. Our approach is scientifically researched and assessed and can make a huge difference to the recovery of sensitive habitats and the local species that rely on them.
Aqua Memorials provide a unique and lasting tribute to loved ones. Cremated remains form part of the structure of the memorials during their production, we offer full traceability throughout this process.
Once the memorials reach their final resting place, their location provides a focus for ongoing remembrance and is a celebration of life and their ongoing contribution to rebuilding our aquatic ecosystems.
Detail:
Our freshwater memorials are small cubes that incorporate a vial of cremated remains. They each weigh 500g and measure around 10cm on each side. They can be placed in any freshwater body to provide an environment for the support of biodiversity and aquatic life.
The Freshwater memorial cubes are produced using the same processes as the Marine memorials on a smaller scale. They are produced using 98% recycled materials and Marinecrete. Marinecrete has a 90% lower carbon footprint than traditional Portland cement based alternatives. It is manufactured in the UK from the waste products of clay mining and does not need high-temperature production.
Freshwater Environment Renewal
Our freshwater environments are in need of help. Many populations of our once common amphibian species have been in decline since the 1970s. Froglife and the University of Zurich has shown that common toad populations have declined across the UK by 68% over the past 30 years.
The signal crayfish was introduced from the US in the 1970s and has out-competed the native White-clawed crayfish. The invasive species was accidentally and intentionally released in the UK and has quickly became established in the wild while the native species has suffered tremendous declines (estimated at over 90% in some counties) leaving them vulnerable to extinction.
